WAR OF THE WORDS
In America, the Scripps National Spelling Bee has been held since 1925. It is the world’s longest running academic competition and it attracts 10 million competitors annually. It has been televised live on ESPN since 1985. Since then, watching little kids spelling very big words has become incredibly popular. Winners become American cultural icons, and the competition itself has become more rigorous as the media attention has intensified and prizes have grown in prestige.
